A Historic Night for Messi

Lionel Messi pulled level with Germany's Miroslav Klose as the joint all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, netting three goals as defending champions Argentina kicked off their title defence with a commanding win over Algeria. The match marked Messi's 200th appearance for his country, and the treble was his first at a World Cup finals. It also pushed his career tally in the tournament to 16 goals, putting him alongside the German forward at the summit of the all-time charts.

Argentina's Hard-Fought Win

Despite arriving as three-time champions, Argentina had to work hard for the win at Kansas City Stadium, where they hope to become only the third nation ever to successfully defend the trophy. The result also broke new ground for the team: they had never previously won an opening match while defending the title, having lost their tournament openers in both 1982 and 1990.

Messi's Moments of Magic

Messi was the driving force behind reversing that record. He broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a gorgeously curled finish, collecting a pass from his Inter Miami club-mate Rodrigo De Paul before bending the ball past goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of French great Zinedine Zidane. The breakthrough came after a chaotic opening spell in which both sides saw goals ruled out — Messi's earlier effort disallowed, followed minutes later by a cancelled Algerian strike.

Playing in his sixth World Cup, a feat unmatched by any other player, Messi escaped without punishment for a reckless tackle on Algeria's Aissa Mandi in the first half. He doubled Argentina's advantage just after the hour, pouncing on a defensive mistake from Zidane to score from close range, then completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with a thunderous strike from outside the box after linking up with Nicolas Gonzalez.

Looking Ahead in Group J

The victory gives Argentina a strong start in Group J, where they will next face Austria and Jordan.

Answering His Critics

For anyone questioning why Messi didn't retire from international football after lifting the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, this performance provided an emphatic answer. Just a week shy of his 39th birthday, he turned back the clock with a sensational showing, snatching yet another record from long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo by becoming the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick.

Much had been said about his decision to continue representing his country after already reaching the top of world football four years earlier. But this display made it clear he isn't in the United States simply to make up the numbers — he's intent on helping Argentina claim a fourth world title.

Eyes on the Record

Having drawn level with Klose's record, it would come as little surprise if Messi claims it outright by the final whistle of Argentina's next match against Austria. Once again, all eyes will be on the Argentine superstar when that game kicks off on Monday.
