The scholarship boy just received one of India’s biggest honours

By the time Rohit Sharma reached the rashtrapathi bhavan, the runs had already been counted. The trophies had already been lifted. The records , the 264 in an ODI, the three double centuries, the most sixes in international cricket history, had already been engraved . India had already celebrated him again. The Padma Shri, presented by President Droupadi Murmu on June 23,2026, was not the beginning of anything. It was the country’s formal acknowledgement of something that had been building for 19 years. This is what the building looked like from the inside.

There is a detail about June 23,2026 that Rohit Sharma chose to lead with himself .That evening ,after the ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, he posted a single line on his social media “19 years ago, it began with an Indian cap. Today another proud chapter is added to the story.”

Not “I am honoured,” Not “Grateful to the BCCI.” Not the carefully worded media statement that most awards produce. Just a date , a number, and a sentence. Nineteen years is a long time to have a relationship with a country’s sporting hopes . Long enough to be loved , doubted , reinvented and finally , formally, recognised.

The Padma Shri sits in a different category from every other award Rohit has ever received . Trophies measure what happened in a match . Records measure what happened across a career. The Padma Shri measured something which is harder to define : what a person’s presence in a sport meant to the country that watched them play it . India has given this award to very few cricketers . When it does it doesn't mean ‘you were the best’ but instead it is saying “you mattered to us in a way that outlasted the game.”

The question that is worth asking then is not what Rohit did to receive the award , it is what India decided  it was recognizing when it gave the award to him.

Borivali , 1999

Prior to all of that, prior to even his debut, prior to his first record-breaking performance and prior to anything else, there was a cricket training camp in Mumbai, which almost did not happen for him.

Rohit was born in Nagpur in 1987, but he did not live with his parents. His father, Gurunath Sharma, was working as a caretaker for the warehouse of a transportation company. They had a one-room house in Dombivli, but they were not able to raise him, thus, Rohit had to live with his grandparents and uncles in Borivali.

In 1999, his uncle gave him the money to join a local cricket camp. That detail , uncle's money, not father's, not a scholarship, not a sponsor , tells you exactly how narrow the margins were. At the camp, a coach named Dinesh Lad watched him and saw something. He asked Rohit to transfer to Swami Vivekananda International School in Borivali, where the cricket facilities were better and where Lad himself coached. Rohit said he could not afford the fees. Lad arranged a scholarship.

"For four years I didn't pay a penny," Rohit said later, "and did well in my cricket."

Lad did one more thing. Rohit had started as an off-spinner who could bat a bit. Lad moved him from number eight to open the innings. He scored a century on debut in school cricket. One coach's hunch, acted on early, and the whole story changes.

This is not the version of Rohit Sharma that appears in highlight reels. The highlight reels begin much later. This part — the scholarship, the single room in Dombivli, the uncle's money is the foundation that everything else was built on. The Padma Shri, in recognising the complete career, honours this part too.

The years India was not Sure

For a long time , Indian cricket’s relationship with Rohit Sharma was complicated. The way relationships are complicated with gifted people . The talent was never in question. The question was whether the talent was ever fully switched on .

He debuted for India in 2007, the same year, the same squad that won the inaugural T20 world cup under Dhoni. He was 20, technically gifted and periodically brilliant . His problem ? ‘periodically’ was doing  a lot of work in that sentence .

He scored one of the greatest ODI hundreds when it mattered . He scored nothing when it mattered even more. Indian cricket fans are not always patient with that kind of variance , and Rohit accumulated a particular reputation of a player who made difficult look easy and straightforward look difficult .

The reinvention came in 2013, when Dhoni moved him to open the batting in ODI’s . What followed was statistically exceptional three ODI double centuries , the highest individual score in the history of the format (264) , a career average of 48.83 across 285 matches , 11,270 runs . The conversation changed but even so for many cricket fans there was persistent asterix , the sense that the transformation had happened in a format and a position that suited him , and that the greater tests were still outstanding

The greater tests came later.

The Captain

Rohit became Test captain in 2021 and took full charge of the white-ball sides around the same time. What followed was the part of his career that the Padma Shri is most directly about.

India had not won an ICC trophy in 11 years. That drought had become something heavier than a statistic; it was a recurring national disappointment, a qualification that followed every praise of India's batting depth and bowling variety. Good enough to dominate bilateral series. Not quite enough when it mattered most.

Under Rohit, that ended. India won the T20 World Cup in Barbados in June 2024. Then the Champions Trophy in Dubai in 2025. Two titles in two years. The same player who had spent the better part of a decade answering questions about big-game temperament had, as captain, delivered the two biggest results Indian cricket had produced in a generation.

His captaincy was not showy. No viral locker room talks, no press conference quotes that made the news on their own. Rather, the thing that teammates and coaches always describe is this unseen environment: a place where players were allowed to feel trusted; where the pressure of expectations was dealt with rather than added to; where a young hitter would feel no ceiling falling on his head from mistakes. He built an environment. The results came from the environment.

Ritika was in the audience at Rashtrapati Bhavan when her husband walked up to receive the Padma Shri. She has been in the audience for a lot of Rohit's cricket. This was different from those moments, quieter, more final, the kind of recognition that does not come with a presentation ceremony at the next match.

What the numbers don't cover

The 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2014 remains the highest individual score in ODI cricket. Three double centuries  a record nobody else in the format has matched. The most sixes in international cricket history. These are real, measurable, already in the books.

The Padma Shri is not in the books. It does not sit in a trophy cabinet. You cannot find it in a batting average.

What it recognises is what those 19 years did  to the culture around Indian cricket, to the expectation of what a captain from a certain kind of background could deliver, to the children in Mumbai suburbs who grew up watching someone who started in Borivali on a scholarship reach the top of the sport and stay there. None of that is in the records. All of it is real.

Rohit retired from T20 Internationals the day after India won the 2024 World Cup. He retired from Tests in May 2025. He still plays ODIs and has spoken about the 2027 World Cup. But the Padma Shri was not announced because of what is coming. It was announced because of what is already done.

The Full Circle

When the Padma Shri was first announced in February 2026 , Rohit released a short video through DoorDarshan . “ Receiving the Padma Shri is a very special moment for me and my family,” he said. “I thank the Government of India for the honour. I am also grateful to all those people who have played by my side all these years and played an important role in my career”He did not name them . He never names them . But the people who know the story know who they are . The uncle who paid for the cricket camp.

The coach who offered him the scholarship and believed in him . MS Dhoni, who moved him to open the batting order and gave him the position where the records would come . Rahul Dravid , who helped him in becoming the captain he became . Ritika, who has been in every audience There is a version of Rohit Sharma’s career that can be told entirely in numbers . It is precise and impressive and says very little about what the Padma Shri is for.

The better version is the one that begins in Borivali , in 1999 , with a  boy whose uncle scraped together enough money for a cricket camp , and a coach who gave him four years for free because he saw something worth investing in . It ends , for now , in Rashtrapati Bhavan on a Tuesday morning in June , with Rohit in a black suit bowing respectfully before walking towards the stage.

He was calm throughout . He smiled when he received it . That combination of calm and smiling , in a room full of India’s highest institutions of state, is exactly the composure he has always operated in . Not loud . Not effusive. Just there , doing the thing , at the level required.

It took India 19 years to formally say what Dinesh Lal saw in a 12 year old boy in Borivali in 1999 , that this one was different ,and that the difference was worth something beyond the scoreboard.On June 23, 2026 it finally said that in writing.
