When washed, synthetic clothes shed tiny plastic fibers called microplastics. These microplastics pass through water treatment plants and end up in oceans, where they harm marine animals and enter the food chain. Studies estimate that a single synthetic garment can release thousands of microplastic fibers per wash.


Waste and Landfill Overflow


The fast fashion business model encourages consumers to buy more clothes and discard them quickly. Globally, over 92 million tons of textile waste are generated each year. Much of this waste ends up in landfills or incinerators, where synthetic fibers can take hundreds of years to decompose.


Discarded clothing also releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as it breaks down in landfills. Additionally, burning textile waste produces toxic fumes that pollute the air.


Carbon Emissions from Production and Transport


Fast fashion relies on global supply chains that span multiple countries. Raw materials, manufacturing, and distribution involve extensive transportation, often by air or sea freight, which generates significant carbon emissions.


For instance, the fashion industry accounts for about 10% of global carbon emissions, more than international flights and shipping combined. The rapid turnover of styles means factories run constantly, consuming energy and producing emissions at a high rate.


The Human Cost Linked to Environmental Damage


Environmental harm from fast fashion also affects people, especially workers and communities near production sites. Polluted water and air can cause health problems, while resource depletion threatens local livelihoods.


In some regions, cotton farming involves heavy pesticide use, which harms farmworkers and reduces soil fertility. The environmental degradation caused by fast fashion thus has a direct impact on human well-being.

  • Care for clothes properly: Washing clothes in cold water and using a microfiber filter can reduce microplastic pollution.

  • Recycle and donate: Extend the life of garments by donating or recycling instead of throwing them away.

  • Choose secondhand: Thrift stores and online resale platforms offer stylish options without new production.

Some fashion companies are adopting more sustainable practices to reduce environmental harm. These include:
