The India men's team began their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign with a 3-1 win over Wales on Saturday, August 15, keeping alive their hopes of ending a 51-year wait for a second men's World Cup title.

The 2026 World Cup, hosted jointly by Belgium and the Netherlands, will take place from August 15 to August 30, with matches being played at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen and the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre.

After opening their campaign with a win over Wales, India face England next before taking on Pakistan in Pool D.

India are pitted against three quality teams in Pool D comprising England, Pakistan and Wales in this edition of the FIH Hockey World Cup, where there have been changes in the format of the tournament.

There are no quarter-finals in the 2026 edition. Instead, the top two teams from each pool advance to a second group stage. The teams from Pools A and D form a new Pool E, while those from Pools B and C form Pool F. Results against the team already faced in the first group stage are carried forward, while each team plays two new opponents. The top two teams from Pools E and F advance to the semi-finals.

India's 1975 World Cup Glory Still Looms Large

The year 1975 remains a defining moment in Indian hockey history.

India had finished third in 1971 and runners-up in 1973 before lifting the World Cup in 1975 by defeating Pakistan in the final. Since that triumph, India have not managed to reach the top four at the tournament, while reigning champions Germany arrive after their 2023 victory.
